The cubs are not yet able to fend for themselves and only open their doors for the first time after two weeks. When the mother is on the hunt, the little ones are defenseless at the mercy of hungry lions and hyenas. Their only chance of survival is the best camouflage possible. The long silver mane helps with that. These protrude upwards, like a mohawk haircut, and from a distance they look like long blades of grass. When they are about six months old, the cubs learn to hunt on their own. After one or two years they are ready to take care of themselves.
