The elephant is sometimes called pachyderm. Yet their skin is so sensitive that they can get sunburn. Therefore, elephants often throw several layers of mud on their backs. In addition, in the scorching heat, this has the pleasant appearance of a 'cool pack'. With their large ears, elephants may not hear better than other animals, but they help to better tolerate the heat in Africa. When they flap their ears, the blood in them cools and that cools them down.
